IN CONVERSATION WITH MAHMOOD AL DAOUD Experimenting on all mediums is important to me, because I believe each medium offers its own unique challenges and opportunities for my creative expression, and I enjoy exploring the possibilities that each one presents. THE FLOW OF STILLNESS | NYUAD PROJECT SPACE The Flow of Stillness is a solo exhibition that takes audiences on a journey in nature. Artist Mahmood Al Daoud finds inspiration in nature in all of his works, and ever since moving to the UAE, he has been taken by the UAE’s unique environment. The exhibition includes works of various media where the artist utilizes sand and other materials from nature in his work. Artworks includes a resin with sand from across UAE installation reflecting light, sketches of boats, mixed media works on canvas, a dark room installation showing a short film that immerses audiences in a feeling of being in sandy environments. MAHMOUD AL DAWOUD A SYRIAN ARTIST WHO SEES NATURE AND ITS OBJECTS COLOR PHENOMENA Accurately delineating the characteristics of the formations depicted in the paintings of Syrian visual artist Mahmoud Al-Dawoud proves to be a challenging endeavor. Renowned for his solo exhibitions and participation in art showcases across Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait, and Spain, Al-Dawoud presents viewers with enigmatic, borderless entities within his artworks. These ethereal forms, devoid of distinct features, seem to effortlessly float within the canvas, prompting the viewer's imagination to play a pivotal role in their completion. Al-Dawoud's creations beckon the audience to witness a semblance of movement, blurring the boundaries between the painted surface and the viewer's mind. Caught in a perpetual quest, Al-Dawoud seeks to encapsulate a concept within his paintings that resists clear manifestation. This leaves the audience in a state of contemplative confusion, grappling with the task of "deciding" the meaning embedded in the art. In an insightful dialogue with "Al-Arab," based in London, Al-Dawoud sheds light on the aesthetic and technical inquiries prompted by his works, offering a glimpse into the elusive nature of his artistic expression. VISUAL SENSATION The visual artist Daoud masterfully combines expressive elements to achieve a harmonious unity among the depicted figures. This amalgamation relies on the simplicity of form, emphasizing the connection of the line to it, and, alternatively, on the deliberate distortion and monumental scale of the masses. Within certain pieces, the interplay between emptiness and fullness assumes a crucial role, accentuating the primary form and unveiling the distorted yet simplified features. These elements are strategically juxtaposed against the backdrop of emptiness, creating a visual dynamic where it seems as though Daoud both encloses and releases the forms, allowing them to occupy the spaces anew. In this artistic realm, all thoughts and possibilities come to a halt, yet preparation lingers, absent yet omnipresent, as an inherent part of the creative process.
